What does Anxiety mean to me?
- Anxiety is having HEART PALPITATIONS every morning you wake up for no reason because you're NERVOUS about your future daily interactions for the day with the people who trigger it.
- Anxiety is attempting to AVOID YOUR TRIGGERS as best as you can by ISOLATING yourself and setting boundaries with the people that trigger it but also feeling WORRIED that you've hurt the feelings of the people that trigger it by attempting to avoid them.
- Anxiety is FEARING the consequences of pushing the people away from you that trigger your Anxiety.
- Anxiety is DREADING confrontation with the people who feel entitled to an explanation as to why you're avoiding them.
- Anxiety is PANICKING before anything can ever happen because you've concocted this entire scenario all in your head. Now you have a massive headache that pain medicine can't cure and tense muscles that relaxers can't sooth.
- Anxiety is wanting to be invited but too physically and mentally drained to attend the event. You want to be alone because the only person you feel safe with is yourself.
- See, Anxiety doesn't always have to come from a place or a thing. An event doesn't always have to occur to trigger an anxiety attack. It can come from dealings with toxic people on a day to day basis. My motto is, "Fewer A-Holes prevent fewer suicides, fewer anxiety attacks, and less depression."
- It is so essential to protect your peace by setting boundaries and removing toxic people out of your life. The reason why toxic people can trigger your Anxiety is that they'll belittle you, manipulate you, drain all of your energy, bring out a negative side of you, and set you up for failure to benefit themselves in the end. So you panic because the fight or flight response is what triggers your Anxiety. Now imagine repeating this entire ordeal every day of your life.
- And so you ask, "How do I maintain my sanity?"
- Well, here are five ways I've learned to cope with my Anxiety.
1. Reading My Bible
- When I read the word of the Lord, I remember that God is always in control. He will humble my enemies and make them a footstool under my feet. (Psalms 110:1). He prepares a table before me in the presence of my enemies. He anoints my head with oil, and my cup will overflow. (Psalms 23:5). After I read my Bible, I begin to reactivate my faith of a mustard seed and cast all of my worries and fears away. The Lord will fight my battles; I need only to be still (Exodus 14:4).
2. Journaling
- Journaling my thoughts and feelings is very therapeutic. It allows me to answer my questions. Anxiety has a way of allowing you to get in the form of yourself by creating a fog in your mind that never existed.
3. Watching Christian Based Movies
- Christian movies such as The Kendrick Brothers' movies are another constant reminder that God is always in control. Christian film inspired by real events enables me to witness the testimonies of other people visibly. God is not only a blessing to you, but he is also a blessing to others. There are comfort and hope in knowing that you're not alone.
4. Watching A Comedy
- Laughter helps ease my stress by taking my mind off the weight that's causing the Anxiety. It relaxes my body by reducing the tension.
5. Engaging In Anything Nostalgic
- When I listen to music from my childhood, it takes my mind off of my Anxiety and takes me back to a time in my life where I didn't have a care in the world. I can listen to a song from my childhood and remember exactly where I was or what I was doing at the moment I heard the song. Great memories come to mind when I think of my innocence. I was blessed to have a family that raised me in a healthy, toxic-free environment. The same family that raised me are still in my life today, and I am forever grateful. They have blessed me with memories that I will cherish for the rest of my life.
